Upper Carniola, Slovenia
After my experiences in Slovenia this past year, there was no way I wasn’t going to include somewhere there among my best places to visit in Europe in 2020. I actually had several choices and while Littoral Slovenia also deserves a mention, I can’t go past the region of Upper Carniola.
One of the most eye-opening trips I went on in 2019 was around the island of Sicily, Italy’s large southern island. Beforehand, I only really knew about Mount Etna and places like Trapani that had been recommended to me. There was no way I would have expected that I could travel around Sicily for a month and still come up short.
Another real highlight of my year was my time exploring Kosovo, a part of Europe that is still in the early stages of opening up to international tourism. While I could just as easily have included all of Kosovo here, it was the western side of this region in the Balkans that left the biggest impression.
Recommending that people visit the south of France is hardly new or novel. And yet, that’s exactly what I’m doing here. The minor different I’m making here though is that I’m suggesting you explore the region of France known as Occitanie.
Adding one final island to the list we have the island of Zealand, the largest island in Denmark proper. Rather than try to unravel the various overlapping types of regions here, let’s just focus on the island itself. Just don’t get it confused with New Zealand as you’ll be thinking about the wrong side of the planet.
